Uncertainty

So some of you that read the FT might have heard the news for those who haven’t you should click on the link.

It’s all lead to a lot of uncertainty and speculation in the office, not least to the future of my department. It’ll be a shame if any of the working practices have to change and more of a shame if the jobs go all together but something I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for, expect the worst and all that.

In other news I just managed to debug a major problem that has plagued two people so far in the office, it just spread to my personal laptop so I had to solve it. When people were opening up Word they would find that within 30 seconds it would close down again. A cursory look at Task Manager was telling that the memory usage was going through the roof. In order to work out what was going on I took a look through sysinternals' process explorer and froze the process just before the crash was going to happen, with the tool I was able to look at the stack for word and realised that it had loaded about 100 copies of the same dll related to printers (something deep in the Windows kernel so I’m not sure entirely what it was). So it turned out that deleting my printer drivers fixed the problem. Not bad for 50 minutes of snooping around.
