Ok so I might have stolen the term from Mr Coupland but I've just been reading the Xooglers blog and find it remarkably remanicant of the above mentioned book, and it also got me thinking.I think I should purchase a dictaphone. Every morning i think about a nice long winded entry and blurb to post to my blog (usually while i'm in the shower), however as soon as i get into work i get pulled into one of my many projects outstanding.Which brings me to the point of the post.When I left University a whole two and a half years ago, In fact probabaly since i was 16 I wanted to be a Computer Programmer, to be able to create programs and methods that could do (as i could see it) just about anything, was a dream i've held onto for a long time, only now i'd like to refactor that opinion. Don't worry i don't mean i don't want to be in my job or i've found my enthusiasm waining, what i mean is i would no longer be content with spending my entire life only coding. I prefer to be a developer.When i moved to my current role at my company I didn't really know what to expect, I was relatively fresh to the whole "real world" employment lark, all i'd done was a year of bumming around (read being a ski and sailing instructor) and then a stint as a tester for the same company, I'd always invisaged my first programming role whould be as a small member of a large team, to get me up to speed. I never thought for the life of me that i'd be a member of as small a team as i am now, working with bleeding edge techniques, taking on large amounts of responsibility and learning so many new things I've lost count.At the moment i'm kind of in charge of the build process, which means i've had to learn all about nant, cruise control.net, and WiX , and am really the chief knowledge holder for these tools, not by design and it's actually not a good thing, we should be much more able to put any of us in charge of any of any part of the process. (after all there are only 4 of us!)but my point is that there's a huge amount of things i've been exposed to beyond just programming, i want to be responsible for these things, and would no longer like to go into a job where i just have to churn code to specification without any input on the process at all.Anyway, i love weekends working, this weekend i've just ported our entire SCM system from Visual Source Safe to Subversion. which was fun but now i've got to rewrite the build so that it grabs the source code from this repository instead of our old one Ah well fun.
