Strength in Depth

I’m often facinated by how insular the Microsoft developer community can be.
Sure we have some great tools at our disposal but I for one am never satisfied just sitting on one side of the fence. I’m fascinated by what’s going on in other development communities and love getting in touch with friends who live developing Ruby and Objective C and other languages to see what’s new in their stables.

Of course I’m not the only one with this desire, Dave Thomas of the pragmatic programmer fame challenged us to learn a new language each year which is a skill I think everyone should have.

I’m planning on presenting an overview of a couple of languages at the .net user group in wellington next month but in the meantime I challenge each of my peers to name one other language they’ve picked up recently.
