As I’m living in London now I’ve felt I should post on the recent(ish) events down here, however all I have been able to come up with is this ramble
Why is it that Londoners have no concept of real security, and how no matter what goes on/ what anyone tries to stop we can never be really secure? There are now so many armed officers on the streets (generally at tube stations) that I’m a lot more scared of the police than most other things. This might come from the fact that every time I see a police officer with a semi automatic weapon I find myself wondering how quickly I would be able to get the gun off them and use it. So while I am quite a stable character and would never even think about acting on these ponderings, I’m pretty sure that there are a couple of people out there who would take such thoughts and act on them.
So the question I keep asking myself is what purpose do these people serve? Why do I need to see that there are heavily armed officers all around? If I was a bomber I wouldn’t be put off, after all I suppose I would be aiming to die anyway. But how is the situation going to be made easier? The answer I’ve come up with is that they don’t help and they are all for show, in which case I suggest getting them off the streets ASAP.
Also I’m deep into 24 and I can’t help but wish that the script writers would focus on a non Islamic terrorist situation. White supremacists anyone? Just a thought!
WARNING TECHNICAL ARTICLE:
For those who know me best, they know how many anti Microsoft rants I have had in the past, rallying against there seemingly unstoppable take over of the computer world (war now lost) and also of there incoherent lack of support for standards. personal grudge is there rubbish support for CSS in their ‘dead from the waist down’ internet browser, IE.
So it may come as some surprise to you (heck it surprises me) that the company I work for as a dev is a Microsoft certified partner. And that I am confined to programming on .Net and SQL server at the moment. However this is not really such a bad thing I suppose, I’m actually growing quite fond of the intricacies of the ASP.net framework, (although it’s still a little to rigid for my liking).
However my favourite thing about the move into a .Net build environment is I’m getting really into automated builds and continuous integration. If anyone has never seen how wonderful a continuous build cycle can be, and how fast it can produce results. Please try out CruseControl.net (or CruiseControl for you Java-ites out there). I’m now somewhat of the Automated build manager here, and have put myself in charge of the automated builds (using Nant) and the continuous integration server. Which is teaching me a hell of a lot.
On a side note I now wish University had introduced me to the concept of agile programming as I would have loved to use some of these techniques on my dissertation.
However I am now reaching a bit of a stumbling block. In that I want to be able to build our MSIs automatically (I’ve got my eye on WiX at the moment), but the trouble is the time it’s going to take to learn the intricacies of the Windows Installer. Man do Microsoft deliberately make it this hard?
END TECHNO RAMBLE
Well it’s been some time since I last updated so I though I would just bombard with a couple of short ones.
